Terms.
Everything made here is one of two things, agreed before the work starts. Under both, Sunbeam owns nothing and takes no cut. That is the whole premise; the rest is detail.
A Sunbeam project
Open sourceBuilt on Sunbeam infrastructure, under the Sunbeam name.
- Source public under Apache 2.0
- Copyright stays with the authors
- Hosting, domains, identity, credits — paid for by Sunbeam
- Forkable if you leave
Published via Sunbeam
YoursWork you already made and own.
- You keep everything, closed source is fine
- A feature on this site
- The Sunbeam mark on the work
- Walk away whenever, no notice needed
Side by side.
| Sunbeam project | Published via Sunbeam | |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns it | The people who made it. Sunbeam holds no copyright. | You. Entirely. |
| Licence | Apache 2.0, public repository. | Whatever you want. No requirement to publish source. |
| Infrastructure | Sunbeam’s: hosting, domain, Passport, OS, CI, credits. | Your own. |
| The mark | Carried while it’s a Sunbeam project. | “Published via Sunbeam”, on that work, while the arrangement stands. |
| Website feature | Listed in the work. | Listed in the work. |
| Money | None by default. Any revenue split is agreed in writing before it’s spent. | None, in either direction. |
| Leaving | Fork it and continue elsewhere. Credits and history stay. | Send a message. The mark and the feature come down. |
Which one applies.
If Sunbeam paid for the server it runs on, it’s a Sunbeam project. If you made it before you got here, or made it on your own kit, it’s published via Sunbeam. Anything unclear is agreed before the work starts — never after.
In both agreements: where a clause reads two ways, the maker’s reading wins. And if a document changes, the version you agreed to keeps governing the work already done.
Plain language, on purpose. Short agreements under South African law, written to be read in one sitting. No lawyers were involved; for anything with real money in it, bring your own. Ask a question →
